schuh has always had a culture of wanting to support our people, communities and have a positive impact where we can. We are committed to continuous improvement and we are constantly challenging ourselves to be better in everything we do for our people and the planet.
Since 2020 when we formalised our purpose pillars, we’ve generated funds, raised awareness and volunteered in support of a range of great charities. We believe this work benefits our communities, our customers and teams.
We have raised just over one million pounds for charitable causes since 2020. That’s made up of direct funding/donations of over £600,000 to our official charity partners such as The King’s Trust, The Mix, The Proud Trust and World Land Trust. schuh customers have generated an additional £300,000 via the purchase of 9 charity tote bags, designed in collaboration with community members from each charity. Finally our brand partners such as adidas, Converse and New Balance, have supported schuh to leverage an additional £100,000 in sponsorship funds for The King’s Trust via our Future You youth engagement event series.
In 2026 we are excited to announce a refresh of schuh’s social impact strategy, putting all of this great work under the banner of “Do More Good”. Do More Good is about making sure our impact is focused, accountable and genuinely reflective of the communities we serve. Our vision is for schuh to be the most progressive and inclusive fashion footwear retailer with the lowest environmental impact, in the UK. This long-term vision requires continuous effort and we will put everything we can into getting there.
Do More Good focuses on three pillars: Wellbeing & Connection, Culture & Community and Environment. We understand that all of these things are connected. Each pillar has its own taskforce, with senior leadership involvement, while the Culture & Community Pillar has support from 3 additional Employee Resource Groups; representing ou LGBT+, Global Majority and Disability communities. This ensures Do More Good is embedded across every department with clear, measurable goals for the business. The three taskforces will meet quarterly to pursue goals connected to their areas of focus.
Our high level objectives for each pillar are as follows:
For Wellbeing & Connection: Proactively support wellbeing across all levels of the business and in our wider community. This includes increasing engagement with our Employee Assistance Programme provided by The Retail Trust, promoting movement and volunteering for wellbeing, and responding to feedback from regular engagement surveys.
For Culture & Community: Proactively ensure representation across all levels of the business. Inspire action and engagement which supports our mission. Champion underrepresented or underserved groups in our wider community.
schuh’s main social impact objective in 2026, which will require support from across the business, is to provide enrichment, employability and employment opportunities to 120 young people from underrepresented groups.
For Environment: Minimise the impact of our business activities on the environment by reducing carbon emissions, recycling & minimising waste & encouraging sustainable business practices.
The biggest challenge currently is the ongoing measurement of our Scope 3 emissions. schuh has been carbon neutral for Scope 1 & 2 and some elements of Scope 3 such as travel and accommodation since 2019.
We are though very much aware of the challenge we have in improving the accuracy of our Scope 3 measurement, whilst remaining carbon neutral as a predominantly multi-branded retailer. We are working closely with our brand partners to get the first full and accurate picture of our Scope 3 emissions this year.
Our plan to meet this objective involves cultural moments and engagement events such as Future You with The King’s Trust, leading to more focussed employability and training opportunities with partners including Fashion Minority Report, The Proud Trust and Ambitious about Autism. A proportion of these young people will have the opportunity to apply for roles at schuh.
As part of Do More Good we’ve also welcomed two new partners - the RSPB and Ambitious About Autism, to join our existing charity partners Retail Trust, The King’s Trust, The Proud Trust and World Land Trust.
Our partnership with the RSPB involves providing funding for local nature restoration projects in the UK, offering volunteering and education opportunities for schuh staff and educating and promoting the positive effects of spending time in nature on one’s wellbeing to our customers.
The three main objectives of our partnership with Ambitious About Autism are to create an inclusive shopping experience for neurodivergent customers, offer supported employability opportunities to neurodivergent young people, and increase understanding of autism within the wider community.
We believe that by clearly defining our social impact objectives and working with long term partners we can allocate our resources effectively, hold ourselves accountable for our progress and ensure our customers and employees can be part of our vision.
